Delivering unique kanzashi with history from Kyoto
Hana kanzashi made by Kintakedo in Gion, Kyoto, are available at Japanese kimono online shop. Hana kanzashi of Kintakedo are all handmade using the technique called tsumami zaiku (pinching technique) by artisans. Just like hana kanzashi worn by maiko, silk habutae dyed at the studio in Kyoto is used. You can purchase a kanzashi which maintains the atmosphere of the hana kanzashi used by maiko.
Features of this kanzashi
This kanzashi uses uchiwa (Japanese traditional fan) as a motif. Uchiwa kanzashi is decorated on a maiko’s head only during July, when Gion Matsuri (festival) is conducted.
On the cool-looking and transparent base of uchiwa, little flowers and butterflies made with small cloth are decorated. Many uchiwa are decorated on a kanzashi for maiko to make it look more gorgeous, but Kintakedo made it smaller and lighter so that it can be used in everyday life (see below).
It is smaller than a kanzashi for maiko, but it is made by an artisan who makes maiko kanzashi; the shape and the method used are the same. At the center of the uchiwa, there is a tiny pink flower decorated.
Why not do your hair with a pretty kanzashi like this one, and visit Gion Matsuri (festival)? You might be spoken to by a maiko who wears the same kanzashi 😉
An updo with a uchiwa kanzashi
