Hana (flower) kanzashi made with the traditional handicraft technique “tsumami zaiku”
Tsumami zaiku (pinching craft) started when a lady of the Imperial Court in Kyoto made it from pieces of kimono cloth about 200 years ago from now; it then became popular among common people, and started to be used for hana (flower) kanzashi of maiko.
Tsumami zaiku hana (flower) kanzashi sold at kimono online shop are made by “Kintakedo”, the shop famous for its authentic and traditional crafts which has continued to make kanzashi for maiko in Gion, Kyoto since the Edo period. It is said that “Kintakedo” is the only shop in Kyoto which manufactures hana (flower) kanzashi for maiko and geisha.

There are two ways to fold tsumami zaiku, and the flower part of this kanzashi is made with the tsumami technique called “ken (sword) tsumami”, and the leaves are folded with the “maru (round) tsumami” technique. You can see the difference of these shapes when looking closely at this flower! Maiko changes her kanzashi which decorates her hair every month.
