“Tsumami zaiku”, the technique to fold small silk cloth to make it look like flower petals, is a traditional art technique used for hair ornaments for maiko and such. These two distinctive features are said to be the origin of ayame, the Japanese name for iris.

The name iris comes from Iris, the goddess of the rainbow in Greek mythology; this name was given, for people imagined of the rainbow which bridges the earth and the land of gods when they saw this flower, and thus the language of this flower has positive meanings.
