Matching things with the person people admire in the Edo period
Have you ever thought about having matching things with the actor or musician you admire?
The person whom everyone yearns for means kabuki actors in the Edo period. Kimono or kimono patterns that kabuki actors had worn attracted everyone’s attention, and those became very popular in a twinkling.
Women who lived during the Edo period often went to the Kabukiza theater in order to see their favorite Kabuki actors. They got a matching things with a kabuki actor and thought of the actor they admired.
Kabuki pattern: Kamawanu
This kanzashi is designed with a motif of the kimono pattern called “kamawanu”.
It is consisted of two Kanjis(Chinese character) 鎌(Hook) and 輪(circle), and Hiragana(Japanese character) ぬ(reading “nu”), and it means ‘I don’t care’ or ‘Never mind’ in Japanese. This pattern became a big hit after a leading Kabuki actor ;Ichikawa DanjuroⅦ wore it on his stage in the late Edo period.
Originally, it is said that Machi yakko (town servants) who had the spirit to ‘going through fire and water for a weak person” started to like to wear kimono with kamawanu pattern.
You will feel generosity and spirit of people in Edo from the kamawanu pattern.
Woman’s mind in the Edo period
The woman giving a man in a mirror the eye had been drawn in the work of Kuniyoshi Utagawa who participated activity in painting Ukiyoe (a genre style of painting or wood-block printing) in the Edo period.
Please look carefully, the thing she put on her hair is the silver kanzashi. Actually it was made to order on motif with a pattern of Kabuki actor: Ichikawa Danjuro’s costume who was popular in those days.
